Austin Poets - Ric Williams

of a particular color

i gather spring blossoms fallen
how the branches hurried
toward fruit seed pods

this cascading
dust yellow

the quince
bled pink

i crush them
sprinkle them
on thinnest tissue

this is the red sun
the yellow wanting

the painter presses his eye
knowing every shadow is a door

& here we are
being

waiting
for rain
for food
for a hand
to press
to fold
to watch
for birds
the water
the wind
the stars
the blooms
trembling
on the green
stems
stiff
&
pumping
water
pulling
ground
pulling
air
the moon

turning

as if

someone
could see

it

change

& she folded in the fields
the islands of snow
sleeping clouds

& when she imagines
the winter trees
naked

what matters
is always
hidden

summer leaf
pointing
to what

pulls
us
in

* * *

we trace what is unseen
even as our mouths
fill with names

beloved

more than
beautiful
enough

existence is
beauty
itself

breathe me she sang & i walked into the other dream
the way my friend is dying & reading books on immortality
& i cannot figure out if he is neurotic or am i who figures illusion
is something we hold to like some other flesh like some sudden
crescendo drum & violin explosive coda following a ten second pause
some sound engineer producer's trick like a kid holding his breath
pretending to sleep before a startling laughing gasp & if we just do not
move ever again what is that but a ghost passing into a wall of light
like breathing air into thousands of lung cells gasping for your shining face:
breathe me, yes, & do not die & when you do let the light carry you
wherever light goes when light cries breathe me; breathe me like
beautiful skin like walking into some other dream with you & me
