New Poems

Classic poems just added to Poets.org: two ballades by François Villon , and from Robert Hayden , "Those Winter Sundays," a restrained lyric evoking the unspoken love between a stern, silent father and his ungrateful son, and the inventive dramatic monologue "[American Journal]," in which an extraterrestrial reports on his observations among the Americans.

New Biography

The author of essays, criticism, and poetry, Edward Thomas struggled against the wishes of his family, and faced personal and financial hardship to pursue a career in writing. First encouraged to write poems by Robert Frost, Thomas wrote over 140 poems in less than three years before his death in battle. Written during WWI, his poems shift between recollections of his beloved English countryside and his wartime experiences. Read three of his poems and learn more about him on Poets.org.

New Essay

"First to last her work is shot through with brightness, streaks of lines and tunes, excited recognitions, hints of transfiguring," writes Marie Ponsot in her newly added essay on the poetry of H. D. "She is a poet who counts on her pleasure in the intense intuition it takes to unify sound and picturing. This serves her gift for co-opting ordinary phrases, making them memorable in oddly elevated ways-as she says, 'realizing a self / an octave above.' She never loses her verbal music."
