turned to the moon
the like of thin old men

winged & voices of fires
& the stones were always sharp
here where dreams slip like hands

the cold comforts
how Judith with her ghosts
white star circles who were never boys

o please let me at least do this one thing
(& words fade inside her heart)

close in the ribbon of the silver watered creek
limestone ledges step down into the songs of men

the nest gathered with faces
dogs & cats: scouts
like gentlemen

almost like
what she

wanted

© 2006 r Lance W'ms February 3 almost like a blue door

& all he saw was a vague intimation
her head hanging down
as if bathed in some
thin honey light
perhaps a train
station at night
the platform
whitish like
a ledge of
limestone
& there was
a chill in the air

close in the cold comforts, he thought

as if the cold were a comfort she wrapped herself in
the cold all she had & the stars her scouts
searching the far distance
the silver ribbon of
her loneliness
how all she
has are
the elements
& the ghosts of
cruelty to guide her
to a place where songs
speak to a reality
that is more
than stone

& what all stories mean is this:
there is a distance
that we do not
understand
that
seems
to want
more of us
even as we
want an end
to wanting
& an open
road that
leads us
further
into
what
we cannot
understand
save in longing
for the distance
to be bridged
with some
thing like
undying
love
